What is pulmonary function testing?
These are a series of measurements used by your provider to determine how well the lungs are functioning. This could reveal lung abnormalities and/or progression of lung disease and aid in the development of a care plan for therapies and treatment.
Most pulmonary function tests include spirometry, which has patients breath through a mouthpiece to record the amount of air coming in and going out of the lungs.
How to Prepare for a Pulmonary Function Test
- Do not smoke for at least four hours prior to the test
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing for natural breathing
- Do not eat a big meal before the test
- Discontinue inhaled/nebulizer medication for four to six hours prior to test.
